Friday Night Live

Dear Diary,

My friends and I did something spontaneous last night. For the past couple of months, my friends and I usually get together at each other's home catching up in front of the TV, watching the 'Masked Singer.' All of us love the show, I get excited to see what kind of costumes each contestant gets to wear. So many colours and the performers who come onto the show have amazing voices. Watching every episode has become a kind of tradition for us and it has been going on for quite some time. We love spending time together, but doing the same thing over and over has been getting a bit boring. So I wanted to make things a little more exciting!

I came up with my own genius idea of having our own singing competition. Each person would pick a song and perform their choice. After each performance the others would rate them with a score using score paddles. I have them lying around somewhere in the house, had them made for a halloween costume last year. Anyways, at the end of each round the person with the lowest score buys a drink for the person with the highest score.

My thought was to host the event at home, I needed to have a few neon lights, a stage and some singing equipment, all of which I didn't have casually lying around. I tried calling a few places, asking if they were willing to borrow their equipment for a couple hours. Clubs, dj's, even the church choir, except for the choir who gave me a very synchronized and melodic "no", the rest hung up without giving an answer.

I spent a week trying to plan this idea out, and no luck getting any closer to renting the equipment I needed. Finally, I had a realization, if I can't get the equipment to come to me then we'll just have to go to the where the equipment is, and I knew just the place. The day of, I sent a message to my friends,

Change of plans, we're heading out. Dress to impress. Jerry bring your car. -Sven

Jerry replied with an excited but confused message,

OK! But where are we going?

Glen was just plainly confused,

Huh? I thought we were just going to stay in, where are we going out?

And Sebastian who sent a simple but final reply,

...K

...

Usually we all meet up at around 7pm, so when I saw them all showing up around that time, I was not surprised. Walking over to Jerry's car, Sebastian who was standing by the rear passenger door, looks over at me and asks, "So where are we going?" Smiling from ear to ear I revealed nothing. Taking the front passenger seat, I gave Jerry the address. The place was 10 minutes away so it was going to be a short ride.

When we reached our destination, I instructed Jerry to park in the back, luckily there are no signs to reveal the shop name so that was one less worry to think about. This part was crucial, stepping out of the car I asked that everyone close their eyes and I would lead them into the building. Jerry and Sebastian played along, but Glen took some convincing. When he found out there will be food involved he closed his eyes in milliseconds.

Once we've stepped inside, you could hear muffled music and people singing but with the number of people by the front desk, and the music playing in the distance, it could easily be mistaken for a social club.

I told everyone they can open their eyes once the staff escorted our group to our reserved room. Inside it was lit up with neon lights, a tv screen mounted on the wall, a booth style table in the center of the room with a mic and booklets for food, drink, and a list of lyrics to choose from.

Surprised at the sight, Jerry took the mic and started to imitate a rock star screaming into it. Luckily the mic was turned off so no one lost their hearing, we need it for the rest of the night to go well. Placing the score paddles on the table I explain to them the game I have come up with. Sebastian who tends to be the more competitive one in the group, stole the mic away from Jerry's hand and insisted that he go first. And just like that, the game had began, we ate, we drank, we sang, we danced, and laughed until our stomaches hurt.

By the end of the night Sebastian won a 6 rounds of free drinks from the rest of us, and did not let us forget it on the ride back home....it's a good thing home was only 10 min away....for me at least.
