The Doctor

Dear Diary,

Has anyone thought of what they wanted to do as a job but weren't sure if they were going to like it? There are so many paths, police officer, salesman, firefighter, architect! How do you know if the path you choose is the right one for you? I decided to try an exercise where for one day I pretend to be the job I think I might like by doing tasks they would do. Today I chose to be a doctor. My first order of business is to see my patient Mr.Teddy. Mr.Teddy is visiting the clinic for an injured arm. The poor thing had a nasty fall and hit his arm on the ground. The injury isn't too bad but it needs to be bandaged up for a few days. Locating my first aid kit I wrap up Mr.Teddy's arm, and give him prescription for taking vanilla ice cream after dinner to keep his mind off the pain.

My next patient was the living room fern, they have been looking quite yellow for the last couple of days, and they seem more tired than usual. They haven't been exercising in the morning, eating their food has been an uphill battle, and nothing seems to be cheering them up. No sign of bugs or mold on their leaves, the soil moisture level is good, and they are wearing the right pot size too. Looking at their recently new sitting spot in the living room it was cool corner spot by the window. With how the sun is shining through the window, I noticed that the fern isn't getting much of it. That could be why they haven't been feeling so well. I prescribed them vitamin D for the next 2 weeks and scheduled a follow up to track progress.

Feeling good about the patients I've helped so far, I stepped outside for a little break to pick up my mail. On my way to the mailbox, I spot something moving by the tree roots on my front lawn. It was a little bird, one of its wings was open, it was struggling to move it. The bird must have fallen from the branch and hurt its wing, it needs help. Approaching the bird, it tried to scurry off in the opposite direction, but with only one wing it didn't get very far. When i reached it, I carefully picked it up and brought into the house to check out its injuries.

Stepping into the kitchen where there was the most natural light, I placed the bird on a folded towl to keep them comfortable. The wing didn't look broken, other than a few missing feathers it looked to be intact. It will need time to rest though, gently folding the wing to its natural resting position, I wrapped the wing to the birds body to keep it in place. The bird seemed to relax a little once the bandage was wrapped, it must have been hurting for some time before I came to help.

...

For the next week, I looked after the bird. Finding a small shoe box I placed the towel inside and placed it by the window so they had a view of the outdoors. Each day the bird became happier, they would come out of the shoe box on their own, hop around to explore the space, and would even sing throughout the day. By the time the weekend rolled around, I removed the bandage and let them test out their wing. It took a few minutes at first for them to realize they could use their wing again. Before I knew it, it jumped into the air and started to fly around the house, singing all the while. Happy to see them fully recovered I went ahead to open the front door to set them free. Seeing what I was doing it flew towards me and hovered in front of me for a brief moment before flying out into the world. I was glad I was able to help them get better, I like helping others.
